Bonang Matheba continues to build her brand in Africa.
The media personality, who has been recognised for her work all over the continent, is preparing to host the second annual Uganda Entertainment Awards. While the TV and radio presenter is excited about the gig, some people feel she shouldn't take it.
Because of the country's anti-gay laws, some of the Top Billing host's gay fans are questioning her decision to take the job. One of those people is DJ and socialite, Olwee.
He wrote on Twitter:
I mean, she's one of the most powerful women in entertainment in Africa. I'm just saying!— Olwee (@Olwee) May 25, 2016
Some people shared Olwee's sentiments...
It's concerning for any public figure to have anything to do with Uganda, considering it's totalitarian, anti-LGBT laws @bonang_m reconsider— #TransLivesMatter (@beyonka_fierce) May 25, 2016
Bonang's fanbase is literally just gay men and Uganda has really harsh anti-gay laws. Like, it's not complicated.— Gaydleyihlekisa (@st_Sdumo) May 25, 2016
Will Bonang be taking her homosexual makeup artist and stylist along to Uganda? Coins 1st, civil rights later.— Lindani (@KhuhlaseKhondlo) May 25, 2016
While others defended her, adding that she's just doing her job...
I don't get the issue about Bonang hosting a gig in Uganda. It's not the government of Uganda that is going to be paying her— #OneTime Ⓜ (@Mukanya0101) May 25, 2016
Why would you expect Bonang to not host the Uganda awards? Has she ever said she's a humanitarian ?— Tshepi. (@TshepiNeverland) May 25, 2016
Bonang is not going to UGANDA to promote #AntiGayLaws, she's going there to work, which is her proffession. deal with it and move on— Whiskey X Tea (@Vusi_Nerdyshian) May 25, 2016
However, Olwee is still not impressed.
Defend her all you want but ask yourself if her make up artist and assistant feel comfortable going there. They're gay.— Olwee (@Olwee) May 25, 2016
What does Bonang think? Well, she feels that Olwee could have said all of this to her face. He does have her contact details, after all.
@Olwee you have my number. Be blessed. ❤️— Bonang B* Matheba (@bonang_m) May 25, 2016
The awards are set to take place in August.
