What's up with soccer players (some) and breaking the law? It has been reported that Orlando Pirates player Ayanda Gcaba was arrested yesterday for contempt of court.

According to Daily Sun, the soccer star was caught speeding and was instructed appear in court in January but he never showed up. A warrant of arrest was reportedly issued for the player, who was originally charged for driving at a high speed.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Kay Makhubela confirmed to the paper that Ayanda failed to appear in court at the beginning of the year. He was detained on Thursday after a warrant of arrest was issued. Ayanda was also reportedly due to appear in court yesterday.

Orlando Pirates spokesperson Mickey Modisane explained to Daily Sun: "He [Ayanda] couldn’t make it to court because he was called up for the Bafana Bafana squad. He was supposed to communicate this with SAFA and the courts, but he failed to do so. It was ignorance on his part."

He added: "We condemn any unlawful behaviour by our players. Soccer players serve as an example to kids and we expect them to behave."

Mickey further told the paper that the players were part of the Discovery Health campaign that taught them to remain focused when they were on the road and to observe speed limits.

He continued: "Unfortunately this is a situation beyond our control."

Ayanda refused to comment and hung up when called by Daily Sun.
