It’s always an interesting site to see when artists become involved in political issues that are causing debate throughout the country. One of those artists is Jozi band CrashCarBurn, who have voiced their opinions and feelings around the fact that President Jacob Zuma is not required to refund any of the R246-million of public money spent on his private mansion in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal.

In a recent statement, lead singer Garth Barnes had this to say about their initiative for the President to pay back the money:

“We’ve never been a political band. We were the lucky generation that grew up in a South Africa that was full of hope and positivity. That hopeful spirit is quietly slipping. To remain silent about the way our leaders are conducting themselves is an insult to those who fought for our freedom.” Gareth said.

The song is called, aptly, Pay Back The Money. For the video which accompanies the song, the band contacted renowned cartoonist Zapiro, with his hilarious cartoons used as the background for the video. Watch the video below.

In 2014, rapper and former group member of hip hop group Entity, Sizwe ‘Vice V’ Mpofu, also released a song, entitled Mr President. This song sparked a whole lot of debate amongst the youth and politicians across the country at the time.
