Comedian Skhumbuzo ‘Skhumba’ Hlophe is one artist with many talents, juggling different mediums of broadcasting, and with his recent post revealed that he has signed yet another deal, why not go down memory lane to find out how it all began.
Skhumba took to social media recently saying that he had joined one of Black Brain's productions - Lock Down, saying:
"Finally joined the Cast of Lock Down!!!!!! Officer Tshabalala...... Really Nervous and Excited at the same time!!!!!!! "(sic)
The comdeian is however not new to the screens, get to know Skhumba better:
- Being a man who is naturally good at making people laugh, Skhumba never thought he would pursue comedy as a career in fact he admitted to DRUM that although he had never seen a lawyer in his life Skhumba says that becoming a lawyer was his first choice of career, however, couldn’t pursue it “because I was dumb,”
- Growing up in a four-room house in Tembisa, Skhumba was raised by his mother - Queen Hlophe along with his grandmother Leria Hlophe, and after obtaining his matric certificate Skhumba got a job as a senior personnel officer at the Tembisa police station.
“My mother worked at a dry cleaner and couldn’t afford to send me to university. But I was never a cop – I’ve never carried a gun. I hate guns,” Skhumba said.
- Skhumba later quit his job in 2016 and soon landed his first gig as a comedian at a nightclub called Caprivi in Tembisa then later went on to Bambatha Avenue Jazz Café to gain more experience in the spotlight for two years.
- Skhumba carries the role of Bheki on SABC1’s comedy series Thandeka’s Diary, which has helped elevate his career. The comedian also had another television appearance on Mzanzi Magic, where he co-hosted a show with media personality Boity Thulo.
- After co-hosting with Bob Mabena on Kaya FM, Skhumba later went on to swoop a Friday morning slot as the main host after Bob Mabena left Kaya FM to pursue more behind the scenes duties as the Group Head of Programming at MSG Broadcasting.
- Skhumba might be spending a great amount of time in the spotlight but he is a family man. After his family suffered a painful loss of what would have been the families first boy. Skhumba has a great relationship with his 11-year-old daughter from a previous relationship and a six-year-old son with his current partner.
Skhumba's career is quickly booming as he is said to be taking on the international stage soon and has no plans of performing in English.
“I won’t perform in English,” he said, jokingly “South Africans are everywhere.”
