Kalushi release date 2017

It feels as though we've been waiting for a lifetime to see the Solomon Mahlangu biopic starring future star, Thabo Rametsi and Pearl Thusi but that day is finally here. Well, almost.

Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa shared the news via Twitter on Thursday, confirming that the film will be released on 10 march 2017.

The news was then shared on the official Kalushi page along with an apology from the film makers for the long wait and constant change in release dates.

The film reportedly took amateur film-maker, Mandla Dube, almost nine years to make.

Kalushi tells the tale of Umkhonto we Sizwe cadre, Solomon Mahlangu, who was charged with murder and terrorism in 1977. He was subsequently executed by hanging in 1979. As many of the apartheid atrocities did, his execution sparked international protests and condemnation of South Africa’s then internal policy.

The film also stars Jafta Mamabolo and Thabo Malema whom Rametsi had nothing but praises for. He also gushed about his co-star, Thusi who plays the role of Mahlangu's girlfriend.

"You guys are going to see Pearl Thusi in a way that you have never seen her before. I think she's not an 'It Girl' anymore, you guys can drop that tag from her. She's an artist. Whatever you guys think of her, she's going to have longevity in this industry," Rametsi said in an interview with Sowetan.

The film has already been quite successful in the international film festival scene. Rametsi has already won the Best Actor accolade at the inaugural BRICS Film Festival which happened in 2016. Locally, the film won a Best Film award at the 2016 Rapid Lion Film Festival.

Judging from the intense trailer, Kalushi is definitely one to watch.

And don't forget that we told you; 2017 is going to be Pearl Thusi's year.
