The world is slowly waking up to the thorny reality of depression. It has claimed so many lives and continues to do so.
Last week, the nation woke up to the sad news of the passing of Idols runner up, Thami Shobede. The 31 year old had carved quite an impressive music career post his memorable stint on Idols in the year 2016.
Although the cause of his death has not been made public as yet. The Citizen Newspaper reported that the Kwa Zulu Natal born star was suffering from depression before he died at Kalafong hospital in Pretoria.
Thami's mother, Mantombi Buthelezi spoke quite candidly about her son's horrific ordeal - adding that, he had started isolating himself from the family.
"The doctor told us he was suffering from depression. I wasn’t really surprised but I didn’t think it would lead to this. On Monday he was fine … but on Thursday he gave in."
The mother also revealed that Thami had been experiencing troubles with non- paying gigs, and the fact that he was the breadwinner put a strain on him.
"He wasn’t a talkative child, so it was hard to tell where he was emotionally. Lately he closed himself in his room for hours. I wish he had spoken to us as his family, I wish I could comfort him. Not so long ago he sent me a message, telling me he will make me proud even though things aren’t going great.He wanted me to trust him and I did.”
Another local star that gave in to their depressing world was house vocalist Nichume. Weeks after her suicide, her family came forth and stated that she was bitterly unhappy with how her music career was being managed. Non payments seemed to have driven Nichume up the wall - amongst other factors.
May Thami's brave soul rest in absolute peace. His contribution to the world of music will never go unnoticed.
