The type of moisturiser you're using is affecting your skin

Have you ever noticed a difference in the consistency between your cream and lotion? As well as how it makes your skin look after application? Well, that is because lotion and cream are not the same thing but each has a number of benefits and is therefore better suited to different skin types.

According to American skin care brand, SALUS, the biggest difference between a cream and lotion is the oil content.

Creams tend to be oilier and are thus able to nourish and hydrate very dry skin because of how thick they are. That is why they are usually sold in jars.  It is therefore recommended that you use creams in winter or in dry climates when there is less moisture in the air.

Because of its thick consistency, it also creates a sort of barrier that helps keep the skin hydrated. That is why so many brands recommend/create night creams.

Lotions on the other hand, contain a larger percentage of purified water and are generally better in the Summertime or in climates with higher moisture content in the air. They moisturise the skin while allowing it to breathe because they tend to be light-weight, non-greasy, and are more easily absorbed into the skin.

An ointment is the heaviest type of moisturizer because it is made primarily with 80% oil and 20% water.

Like creams, ointments form a barrier that help seal in moisture into the skin and are recommended for extremely dry skin or dry areas such as the elbows and feet.

They also work best to treat skin conditions such as eczema, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

Those with oily skin would do best to avoid creams and ointments in favour of lotions or gels.

Gels offer oil-free hydration and work especially well for combination skin types.

All of these can then be mixed with additional, essential ingredients that help boost the existing benefits of the lotion and therefore serve different purposes such as evening skin tone, improving elasticity or lightening of blemishes etc.
