Bonang's tips on dealing with bad publicity

Bonang Matheba has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons lately.

The TV and radio personality, who had her E! Entertainment special about a week ago, has been accused of having an affair with AKA. Bonang, who has since dismissed this, has decided to sue DJ Zinhle for defamation and has even demanded an apology from her.

Things have also not been easy for the Top Billing and Afternoon Express host on social media. She has been called a "homewrecker" and has had all sorts of insults thrown her way. Despite all of the social media negativity, Bonang has not retaliated. She seems to have mastered the art of keeping her cool in the midst of controversy

So how does she handle bad publity?

Speaking at the Women in Media Seminar two weeks ago, Boang said: "I believe it takes a lot of maturity. You need to get to a point in your life where you realise that you can't allow people who aren't responsible for your happiness to take it away from you. And also when you're in media you have to have a very, very tough skin."

She explained that she leans on her parents during tough times, adding: "I'm a very, very spiritual girl. Lots of praying, lots of going to church, lots of meditation. So that's where I get my strength from."

She said as the years go by and as she grows in the industry, she has learnt not to attend every argument she's invited to: "And you also get to a point where you're like I... you have to decide why you're doing it. Are you doing it for yourself, to fulfill yourself to make yourself happy? Or are you doing it for the world? Because when you do it for the world all the reasons are gonna change and you're gonna always feel like you are not enough."

Bonang doesn't believe in allowing others to dictate how she feels, saying: "To empower a human being like that, for them to be responsible for how you feel at night? To allow them to get into your space with negative thoughts? That's not a good thing. It kinda moves you from the journey and the path. You have to be clear, you have to incredibly incredibly tough... You have to have a great team around you..."
