What Our ZAlebs Did For #MandelaDay!

Jul 19, 2019, 09:00 AM

South Africa has a lot of public holidays, each with its own traditions but Madiba Day has a special place for all of us. On this special day, we celebrate the great life of our nation's first president, the late Nelson Mandela.

The Madiba Day tradition is one that encourages us to give back to our communities. It is a way that we all can come together to build the great country President Mandela once lead. We give 67 minutes of our time to help those in need as a way to commemorate the 67 years he spent in prison during apartheid.

Yesterday, and throughout this weekend, people from all over the country and some in other parts of the world will spend at least 67 minutes giving back in honor of Madiba.

There's still to hop on the train, but here are what a few of our ZAlebs were up to on this special day!

The First Lady
The government obviously can't skip out on a day honoring our first president. Our leaders spent the day running different initiatives over the entire country to give back for their fallen leader. Our current First Lady, Dr. Tshepo Motsepe, was also out there giving back to the community. She teamed up with the Top 16 finalists of this year's upcoming Miss South Africa pageant at Olifantsvlei Primary School in Eikenhof.

Relebogile Mabotja
The Metro FM host also took time to give back. Relebogile may be having trouble with some listeners lately but that isn't stopping her from giving back to her country. The radio host actually has a foundation already set up for her to do just that all year round. This year, the Relebogile Mabotja Foundation teamed up with Wimpy to give away 67 meal vouchers for those in need.

Maps and Fresh
Speaking of Metro, DJ Fresh joined the likes of Maps Maponyane on his Madiba Day. The radio veteran also joked on social media about how much free time he's had since losing his job so it's good to see him fill the time with a good deed. The two stars were a part of a project with Netflourist and helped back hundreds of gift bags and lunch boxes for charity.
