#WhatWentDown: Khumbula at the Red Bull Music Festival Launch

Apr 06, 2018, 11:41 AM

RBMFJHB Zoe x Langa

The name of the show was Khumbula. It actually felt like listening to an elder talk about the songs that they grew up listening to. But in the best way possible because those tracks included some classic Afro-pop and Kwaito.

The night started off with some mellow tunes brought forth by DJ Leeu. When the pair came onto stage you kind of knew it was going to be heat. The first track they did? The late Hugh Masekela's 'Thanayi' of course. Tackling the chorus together and Langa handling the verse work. That was just the beginning.

The night saw the pair go through other classics such as Caiphus Semenya's 'Ziph' inkomo', Busi Mhlongo's 'Yise Wabant' abam', Ringo's 'Sondela', 'Ndiyagodola', Thandiswa's 'Nizalwa Ngobani' and Letta Mbulu's 'Music In The Air'. Of course, what's classics without touching on some kwaito and hip-hop favourites. 'Magasman', 'We Love This Place' and 'Music and Lights'

Of course, this launch was also meant to show the overall theme of this years music festival: blending old with the new so the rising super stars got a chance to perform their own compositions which have gotten so much love 'Sunday Blues' and 'Inganekwane'

After which the night was seasled off by DJ Kenzhero whose mixing blended the past with the future sounds.

A night well spent and a great preview of the festivities still to take place. Tickets to the rest of the festival taking place at The Orbit, Kitcheners, Great Dane, And Club, Newtown Music Factory and Republic of 94 are still available at redbullmusicfestivaljhb.com and the ticket prices range from  R100 - R700. So go get yours and get in on the action.
