Why a David Tlale "Project Runway" makes sense

David Tlale

Calls are now open for anyone with dreams of becoming a famous fashion designer to enter to get in the running to become David Tlale's Intern in the reality TV show of the same name. The show is set to debut on SABC 3 later in the year.

Many will remember the Claire Mawisa presented The Cut many years ago. It was quite entertaining, but few remember who even won that design reality TV show all those many years ago, let alone what ever happened to the rest of the contestants. We currently have SABC 1's Raw Silk, and while that's great, with a credible judging panel that includes designer Ole Ledimo, here are a few reasons why we think David Tlale's upcoming The Intern reality TV show might be one worth watching.

David Tlale is a superstar designer

What lent a show like 'Project Runway' credibility (at least when it started) was that it had renowned and legendary American designer Michael Kors judging alongside renowned and respected fashion journalist Nina Garcia with Tim Gunn, the chair of the Parsons School of Design, mentoring the contestants. The balance of credibility and familiarity that these judges and Heidi Klum struck made this a winning recipe. While we are not yet sure who will be joining David Tlale on the show yet, he alone symbolises credibility and prominence with over 15 years as a revered designer, and being the only South African designer to have showcased on the main calendar at global trade show like New York Fashion Week.

He's already doing it. Why not put it on TV?

David Tlale The Intern

David Tlale already has an internship programme called The Intern that has been running for years now. Each year, the designer recruits a few young designers, mentors them, and gives them the opportunity to shine on a big stage with their own standalone show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. While it would have been more interesting if the show went behind the scenes on this process rather than seeking to find new recruits for the TV show specifically, we're still not complaining!

Who doesn't want to get a closer look into the designer's process?

Of course everyone wants in on what goes on behind closed doors at the House of Tlale, no? Even though many of us probably can't afford a David Tlale, aspiration is a real thing, and of course we want to know how the man behind one of the most recognisable local brands goes about producing those exquisite collections.
