Cell C announced that they were no longer sponsoring Miss SA earlier this year after their 5-year contract came to an end. The cellular giants opted against renewing the contract, choosing to focus on other objectives. This news had been in the works for some time and the brand confirmed their decision when their spokesperson said:
"While we can confirm that our partnership as headline sponsor of this property has come to an end, the value that it has provided to Cell C as brand has been outstanding."
With the hunt for a headline sponsor ongoing, many feared that 2019 would go ahead without a Miss South Africa as registration was meant to have begun last year already. However, the pageant organisers have confirmed that everything will still go ahead and are confident they can crown Tamaryn Green's successor before the end of the year.
Sun International's spokeswoman Zoleka Skweyiya said :
"The pageant is not cancelled. We are hoping to announce some exciting news soon regarding the 2019 contest."
She also confirmed that Tamaryn Green will remain Miss South Africa until such a time as a new incumbent is announced (imagine if she gets to hold onto the crown for twice as long as anybody else!)
"Although the current Miss SA has resumed her studies, she will retain her title until she hands over her crown to her successor,"
It would be a real shame if we did not get to see another Miss South Africa crowned this year, especially after the entertainment that the likes of Lady Zamar provided for us last time around. Not only is the pageant an exciting fixture in the annual events calendar, but our winners have done incredibly well on the global stage.
Miss SA 2017, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was crowned Miss Universe in 2018, while Tamaryn Green nearly repeated the feat a year later. Prior to that, Miss SA 2014, Rolene Strauss made us proud when she won Miss World that same year.
Will you be devastated if we don't see a Miss South Africa 2019?
