How Zakes' late mom saved his music career

Talent can only get you so far, but knowledge can get you further

You might have heard this a million times but it's true, sometimes, if not most of the time, talent is not enough to survive in this dog-eat-dog world we call the music business.

There is so much that goes into becoming a successful musician, that's why some of the least talented performers in the world become the most successful while the most talented, continue to struggle to get their share of the musical pie, and that is what Zakes Bantwini understood from a very young age, thanks to his late mom.

In a recent interview on Ukhozi FM, the musician spoke fondly of his late mother and how she basically saved his music career by encouraging him to go study music.

"My mom encouraged me to study music, she was a teacher and really loved education. My mom went back to studying education even after giving birth to four kids. She left us and continued to go study education, so she didn't let her being a parent hinder her aspirations to go study what she loved," he said.

The proud father further added that it was her mom's wish to see her kids live a better life than she had, and that encouraged her to study further. Instead of earning a living from a job that paid her little, she decided for three years to go study so that her kids would be way better off than she was.

Zakes also shared that his mother was not too sure about his decision to take up music as a career. However, she did encourage him to go study for his craft if he really wanted to make a mark in this world with his music and that's exactly what he did.

A few years ago, the singer graduated with a Diploma in Music Performance from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)
His qualification in music is quite ironic considering that his mother used to tell him that he could be anything he wanted to be in life, as long as he was able to present a certificate to her for that particular profession.

So, dear reader, if you're someone who aspires to be in the music industry, do consider studying this profession it will assist you in avoiding the traps that come along with this business, especially when it comes to your finances.
