Ever since this year's Mandela Lecture speaker was announced, South Africans have been clamouring for tickets to the event. A few of our celebs were lucky enough to make it in and we lived vicariously through their timelines and stories.
According to the foundation, The Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture is one of the Foundation’s flagship programmes to honour its founder, Nelson Mandela. Every year since 2003, global leaders have used the lecture to raise topical issues affecting South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world.
This year’s theme was “Renewing the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active Citizenship in a Changing World” and the lecture focused on creating conditions for bridging divides, working across ideological lines, and resisting oppression and inequality.
An estimated 15 000 people attended the lecture, held at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, a day before Nelson Mandela International Day, also known as Mandela Day. This year was also highly celebrated as it marked 100 years since Madiba was born.
