#National teachers day

Today, 5 October, marks World Teachers Day and we've listed our favourite teachers from various TV shows in South Africa.

Menzi Ngubeni on Yizo Yizo

More of a bad boy than a teacher, Menzi Ngubeni used to play the role of "Elliot" a teacher with cornrows who flirted and sometimes slept with his own students. He was not exactly the best example of a teacher but there was something about him that had viewers gravitating to this on-screen teacher.

S'thandiwe Kgoroge

S'thandiwe Kgoroge played the role of teacher, Zoe Cele, on Yizo Yizo. She was the complete opposite of Menzi's character, rather than taking advantage of her students, Zoe always encouraged and pushed the students to their full potential to such an extent that she'd even place her own life in danger for the sake of her students.

Whoopi Goldberg in Sarafina

Ok, so Whoopi Goldberg may not be South African but she sure left a mark on every student who watched Sarafina for the first time back in the 90's.

Whoopi played the role of Ms Mary Masombuka, an inspirational teacher who taught her children to always search for the truth outside of the classroom and to constantly remain true to their individuality, which is quite commendable considering how individuality in schools is hardly encourage.

Tsholofelo Matshaba

Tsholofelo Matshaba who plays the role of a teacher by the name of Keneilwe Mogotsi on SABC 2's Mamello is on the list thanks to her resilient character who survives an abusive relationship and a very idealistic principle in the local drama.

With all the drama happening in her life, Keneilwe is still determined to make Mamello High the best school in her community.
