8figurez is stepping into a new phase of his career, taking complete ownership of his music while embracing the Nigerian and South African influences that have shaped him.
His newest single, Stay Fresh, marks the first time he recorded and engineered his own vocals. The artist said handling the process himself gave him a stronger sense of confidence and made the track feel more intimate.
“I had never been fully responsible for that part of the process before,” he said. “Taking control of it changed my confidence completely and made the song feel even more personal.”
For 8figurez, Stay Fresh is a reminder to remain authentic regardless of the circumstances. He described the release as both a sonic and visual reflection of his current artistic identity, shaped by his state of mind, personal experiences and the atmosphere he encountered in and beyond Cape Town.
Born in Nigeria, the musician relocated to South Africa 15 years ago to pursue his studies and begin building his career. Since then, he has worked with established artists, including Gemeni Major.
His connection to both countries became especially significant during recent protests and social tensions involving South Africans and foreign nationals, when he found himself pressured to choose one side. Rather than enter the conflict, he concentrated on keeping his family safe and protecting his peace while remaining proud of his heritage.
“Cape Town is an important part of my story,” he said, noting that the city’s energy, multicultural character, lifestyle and traditions have influenced him personally as well as creatively. “I am Nigerian by blood, but South Africa helped build my life and career. My first son has both South African and Nigerian heritage. When the protests began, people expected me to take a side, but I never did because I belong to both.”
8figurez is now preparing his debut album, which is expected to arrive toward the end of the year. The project includes work with producers MashBeatz and Buzzi Lee.
He said his career has allowed him to collaborate with musicians and producers from a wide range of countries and cultural backgrounds, and that this variety remains central to his approach. While he continues experimenting with different sounds, he is particularly drawn to partnerships that allow artists to exchange ideas, develop and create something distinctive.
Among his hoped-for South African collaborations are DJ Maphorisa and Blxckie. He added that his wish list is extensive and that he expects many more exciting creative partnerships in the future.
