Isibaya actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana is due back in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on October 28 after she was allegedly caught driving far above the legal speed limit on KwaZulu-Natal’s N2 highway.
Actress faces second court appearance
Mqokiyana is expected to make her second appearance before the Scottburgh court following her arrest by the Road Traffic Inspectorate’s Park Rynie unit at Ellingham.
- She was driving a BMW X3 SUV at the time of the alleged incident.
- Officials claim she was travelling at 198km/h in a 120km/h zone.
- The alleged speed was 78km/h over the permitted limit.
- Her first court appearance took place on October 19.
Road safety operation remains active
KwaZulu-Natal transport and human settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said the actress’ arrest should serve as a warning to every driver that the Nenzani LaEzweni campaign remains underway.
“The arrest of actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana is a reminder to all motorists that the Nenzani LaEzweni operation is still in full swing,” Duma said.
Thousands of vehicles stopped in one week
Between October 15 and October 21, RTI officers and Operation Shanela teams stopped 12,073 vehicles and handed out 421 charges for speeding.
- A total of 1,719 motorists were charged during the same period.
- Among them, 87 were accused of driving without licences.
- Another 141 drivers were charged for failing to wear seatbelts.
- Authorities identified 112 unlicensed vehicles.
- Officials impounded 140 vehicles for operating without the required permits.
More enforcement planned ahead of festive season
Duma said authorities would stage more than 26 multi-agency Nenzani LaEzweni operations from October 22 to October 28. A further 15 operations will specifically target motorists suspected of drunk driving.
“The RTI will have no mercy this festive season, as demonstrated during Transport Month,” Duma said.
