Botlhale Boikanyo’s Mom Surprises Her With a New Car on Graduation Day

Poet and actor Botlhale Boikanyo’s graduation was already a moment straight out of a dream—she crossed the stage at the University of the Witwatersrand to receive her Bachelor of Arts Honours in Film & Television.

Then, just when it seemed her big day couldn’t get any better, her mother, Mumsy, pulled off a surprise that took the celebration to a whole new level: a brand-new car.

South Africans first got to know Boikanyo when she appeared as a fresh-faced 11-year-old on SA’s Got Talent, leaving viewers impressed with her talent. Reflecting on how her daughter had spent the past year balancing lectures, deadlines, and an active media career, Mumsy chose to reward that hard work—while keeping the surprise under wraps until the final moment.

Boikanyo shared that what she assumed would be a quick stop—an errand to visit the dealership so her mom could collect her new vehicle after recently earning her PhD—ended up being a double celebration neither of them expected.

Taking to Instagram, she wrote that she still couldn’t believe what was waiting for them. “This might be the biggest surprise of my life. As if graduation day wasn’t already one of the most unforgettable days of my life, my mom somehow made it even more special,” she said. She added, “I thought we were rushing to collect my mom’s new car after graduation (you all know she had just earned her doctorate, so we were excited to celebrate Dr Mom). Little did I know there were two cars waiting for us—one for Dr Mom and one for me.”

After the reveal, the rising star also wrote an emotional message to her mother, putting into words just how much Mumsy means to her.

“No words will ever capture how blessed I am to have my mom. She’s been my greatest supporter, the woman who anchored me in prayer, nurtured my voice, and taught me to dream without limits. More than anything, she’s my greatest inspiration,” Botlhale shared.

She continued: “She has defied the odds, broken generational cycles, and built a life rooted in purpose, kindness and love. I always say I know God is real because I’ve experienced His love through my mom. Thank you, Mom. I love you so much.”
