The Confederation of African Football has restored the Africa Cup of Nations to a biennial schedule after its executive committee unanimously approved the change on Thursday.
Quick facts
- AFCON will again be staged every two years.
- CAF’s executive committee approved the decision unanimously.
- A proposed Africa Nations League is not yet ready to replace the tournament.
- Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are due to jointly host AFCON 2027.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe had recently indicated that the governing body would revisit its previous position at a continental strategy conference in Cabo Verde.
Last year, CAF decided to move the flagship African national-team competition to a four-year timetable. The executive committee has now reversed that decision.
CAF had previously suggested replacing AFCON with a new Africa Nations League, also intended to be held every two years.
However, the organisation concluded that the proposed league would need several more years of development before it could become internationally competitive and financially self-sustaining.
The next Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled for 2027, with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda set to co-host the tournament.
