Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has suggested that Vinicius Jr may not immediately regain a starting place when he becomes available again, with the manager stressing that collective performance will outweigh individual status in upcoming selections.
Vinicius faces fight for starting role
The Brazilian forward has endured a difficult campaign, finding the net only once across all competitions. His recent absence from league action has further changed the competition for places in Madrid’s attacking line.
- Vinicius is serving a three-match LaLiga suspension.
- Yan Diomande was given an opportunity during the ban and has impressed in the side.
- Vinicius is nearing the end of his domestic suspension.
Mourinho prioritises the team
Asked whether the returning player would create difficult selection decisions, Mourinho indicated that no player would be guaranteed a place solely on reputation.
“The team is what matters most,” Mourinho said. “It is true that Vinicius has played in the last two Champions League matches. But when everything returns to normal and he is completely available, I will handle the situation accordingly.”
The comments point to a potentially tougher path back into the first team for Vinicius, particularly if Diomande continues to make a strong case for inclusion while the Brazilian completes his LaLiga ban.
