South African gospel icon Dr Rebecca Malope has celebrated turning 58 in spectacular fashion, surrounded by her family, close friends and some of the country’s biggest names in music and entertainment.
A Star-Studded Birthday Celebration
Malope’s daughters, Noluthando and Thandeka, arranged an elegant green-and-white party in their mother’s honour. The guest list included Yvonne Chaka Chaka, maskandi veteran Ihashi Elimhlophe and his wife, Linah “Ebony” Ngcobo, gospel performer Khaya Mthethwa and actress Sana Mchunu.
Most attendees followed an all-black clothing theme, leaving Malope to command attention in a flowing white-and-gold ombré ball gown. The birthday girl said she was deeply moved by the artists who made time to celebrate with her.
“Seeing so many artists there was incredible and deeply special,” Malope said. “I felt honoured that they came to share my birthday, and it made me feel wonderful inside.”
“Getting My Flowers While I’m Still Alive”
The occasion also gave Malope an opportunity to reflect on the recognition she has received throughout her career. She said the celebration made her feel as though she was finally being appreciated in the way she deserved while she could still experience it.
“Receiving these honours and being celebrated in my lifetime is incredibly humbling,” she said. “It reminds me that I have a huge family here in South Africa. Beyond the family I was born into, the entire country has become my family.”
Malope added that the affection shown to her was overwhelming, revealing that she cried continuously during the party because she felt so loved.
A Landmark Chapter in Her Career
The birthday festivities arrived during an especially significant period for the gospel powerhouse. In the months leading up to the milestone, she received two Lifetime Achievement Awards: one at the 2025 Metro FM Music Awards and another at the Basadi in Music Awards.
- Her recorded catalogue has now expanded to more than 40 albums.
- Malope began her professional journey in the mid-1980s after gaining attention as a teenager through the Shell Road to Fame talent competition.
- She initially worked in bubblegum pop before moving into gospel, the genre that ultimately established her enduring legacy.
- In 2021, she received the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver for her contribution to South African music.
- Her honours also include more than 20 South African Music Awards collected over the course of her career.
Now just two years from turning 60, Malope remains fully active. Known affectionately to some fans as Mam’ Ribs, she is currently travelling internationally on a world tour. European dates have already taken place, while Australia remains on the itinerary.
