This past weekend, thousands of EFF supporters gathered at the Chatsworth Sports Stadium in Durban for the party’s provincial manifesto launch. Kelly Khumalo was booked as one of the musical acts to keep the crowd entertained.
Kelly opened her set with a high energy performance of one of her songs – but the crowd wasn’t about to let her finish. Moments after taking the stage, a group of fans hung ub a “Justice For Senzo” banner over the stands. That’s right, someone came prepared to harass a woman over her grief yet again.
After performing her first song song and getting ready to perform another, members of the crowd grew too loud to ignore as they chanted Senzo’s name. Khumalo rightfully signaled the DJ and said “one more and then I’m out of here”.
Khumalo had been dating Meyiwa when he was fatally shot by intruders at her home in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, five years ago right in front of her and her family. This woman has not been allowed to forget such a traumatic moment since that day thanks to the violence and insensitivity of Senzo’s male dominated fan base. She is ridiculed even when it has nothing to do with her.
She left the stage after the second song. You can see the star is visibly upset, as one would be. Guess the question becomes: When does Kelly Khumalo get to move on? With a new album and book out, can people not focus on that?
