The DSTV Content Creator Awards have just concluded and like any other award ceremony, the results have led to polarised views on social media. Specifically for the most coveted award of the night, which was arguably the Podcaster of the Year. An award which is seemingly as coveted as the Artist of the Year in terms of music and South African Music Awards.

Therefore, when Mpoomy Ledwaba won the coveted award, tweeps were quick to take to the timeline to question whether the award was deserved as compared to Africa’s biggest podcast Podcast and Chill with MacG.
All there is to know about Mpoomy Ledwaba’s YouTube channel
Mpoomy Ledwaba is one the undisputed leading YouTubers in South Africa. Officially, her channel was started in August 2016. In the six years since starting her channel, she has garnered over 246 000 subscribers on the channel.
Her channel is set up from other YouTube channels as it is wholly family, female and spiritual based. This is as her content on the channel consists of family vlogs with her two children and husband and Idols SA alumni Brendan Praise, her Wellness and Wisdom content interviewing inspirational women who have found success through faith, faith covers, and Our Love Journey which details touching love journeys.
In the years since the inception of her channel she has amassed over 21.9 million views.
All there is to know about MacG’s YouTube channel
MacG’s channel was created in October 2011. But formally, the channel officially began rolling out content back in 2020 during the lockdown with the title show for the channel being Podcast and Chill with MacG, Lenn Moleko and Ghost Lady: initially MacG’s girlfriend and YouTuber Naledi Toasts, now persona only known as real name Khanyi.
Currently, the podcast has over 730 000 subscribers, a number they reached so quickly that the podcast was credited as the fastest growing podcast earlier in the year. It has over 100 million views and counting to date. Moreover, besides Podcast and Chill, the channel has other podcasts including City Girl, On the Table and Podcarst and Chill.
MacG vs. Mpoomy Ledwaba: Who deserves it more?
In light of the side-by-side comparison, tweeps did not waste time debating who deserved the Podcaster of the Year award. Those that purport the win by Ledwaba and her husband in extension, have been anchored by their stance based on the fact of the content produced by Ledwaba & co. This is as Ledwaba’s channel is not aimed at “scandal” but creating wholesome content aimed at uplighting families and individuals looking for some positivity on social media.
On the other hand, those vying for Podcast and Chill have based their argument on the basis of numbers and overall impact of the podcast. To date there are a number of impactful strides that the podcast has made. Whether it is helping Celeste Ntuli sell out her comedy show, giving the likes of Mapaputsi and Dr Malinga a second chance in the media’s spotlight, or having local legends like Dr John Kani and Lebo M. The podcast has and still remains the reason for some of the most impactful trends on social media weekly, whether for the good or the bad.
Who do you think deserved it?
