Nomvelo Makhanya has been in the entertainment industry for what seems like an entity. The star started off her career as a child and many of us have seen her grow up right in front of our eyes.

Although the star is only 23, her wisdom and courage separate her from her peers. Over the years, the Scandal star has positioned herself as one of the few celebrities who openly talk about their mental health.

A couple of years ago, the star reportedly revealed that she was diagnosed with bipolar, anxiety & depression and since then, she has been a voice for those who are going through similar struggles.

In an interview with TshisaLive, she opened up about how she felt when she was diagnosed.

"when I visited my psychiatrist he told me that he wanted me to book myself into hospital the next day. I was hesitant. I kept thinking, 'Dr, I need to get back to work tomorrow'. I was also scared that people wouldn’t understand and that I would be away with no support."

She then went on to add, "I felt like I was drowning and felt like with every breath I was waging a war against myself."

The actress seems to be in a better place as she recently announced an amazing initiative! Nomvelo will host a Mental Talk seminar on the 27th of July. This event aims to be a way to educate and empower those who deal with mental health issues on a daily basis.

Nomvelo is not the only star who has been open about her mental health struggles. A few years ago, Lalla Hirayama got candid about what she has been through. The TV personality revealed that she struggles with anxiety attacks.

Another star who has also been open about her struggles is Bonnie Mbuli. The actress and TV presenter opened up about her depression in her book, Eyebags & Dimples.

If you have or know of anyone who is suffering from depression, please get in contact with the South African Depression and Anxiety Group for help.
