Cassper Nyovest whose real name is Relfioe Maele Phoolo was born on 16 December 1990 in Mahikeng, North West Province, South Africa.

He studied at Sol Plaatjie Secondary School where he participated in athletics amongst other sporting activities. Cassper Nyovest's biography indicates that he started rapping in 2002 at the tender age of 12. 

At the age of 13, Cassper formed a hip-hop group, Childhood Gangsta, with his friends. After he left this group, he joined another eight-member group called Slow Motion which included record producer Aashish Gangaram of Ganja Beatz.

Consequently, Cassper Nyovest became an independent artist. He moved back home and in 2014, he started his own record label, Family Tree Records.
