Rapper Mthembeni Ndevu, better known as Emtee, has been granted R2,000 bail by the Midrand magistrate’s court after 16 days at Johannesburg Correctional Centre.
Protection-order case withdrawn
Ndevu’s arrest followed allegations that he had breached a protection order secured by his estranged wife, Nicole Chinsamy.
He had been scheduled to appear on Wednesday for a possible trial. Instead, the court heard bail proceedings after new developments emerged, including Chinsamy’s withdrawal application filed on Monday.
Taking the witness stand, Chinsamy said she had chosen to end the matter because she wanted to put the dispute behind her and continue with her life.
Ndevu declined to give evidence, exercising his constitutional right to remain silent.
Family finances cited during bail hearing
His advocate, Kwena Manamela, presented an affidavit explaining the financial difficulties allegedly experienced by Ndevu’s parents, Lumikile and Phathiswa Ndevu, and his three minor children since the arrest.
- Rental payments had reportedly not been made during Ndevu’s detention.
- School fees for his three children were also said to be outstanding.
Bail terms and next court date
The court approved the R2,000 bail application with conditions requiring Ndevu to comply with the protection order and all of its provisions. Among those restrictions is a ban on posting anything about Chinsamy across social media platforms.
Earlier conditions barred Ndevu from communicating with Chinsamy at all. The court has now clarified that they may speak when the conversation concerns their three minor children.
Ndevu is due back before the court on September 10 for further representations.
