When news of Isidingo being canned broke on social media, the hearts of many South Africans were broken, but surprisingly, some actors did not know of the news.
Motlatsi Mafatshe, who plays Sechaba Moloi on the popular soapie, spoke to Metro FM's Mo Flava on how majority of the cast members found out about the show coming to an end.
Imagine finding out through Twitter that you will be jobless in a matter of months. Well, according to the actor, that is how they found out and he has gone on to slam the SABC on how they handled the show's cancellation.
Motlatsi said the SABC had informed them last year that the show would not be cancelled, but much to their dismay, plans changed and the announcement was made without their knowledge.
"They could have done it gracefully. The majority of people, the actors, found out on Twitter. That is so distasteful. When a blogger finds out first that a show is going to be canned," he said.
After gracing our screens for the past 10 years as Sechaba, Motlatsi reckons that the show's legacy deserved a proper farewell where the artists are properly celebrated.
"For a show that has been there for 21 years, you would want to celebrate the artists. It leaves a bad taste that maybe the performers or the people who work there aren't good enough."
The reason put forward for the soapie's cancellation was the decrease in viewership which resulted in failing to attract advertisers. However, Motlatsi disagrees with that statement as he thinks the broadcasters just wanted a new show to replace Isidingo.
“There's no way you can tell me the show isn't getting any ad time. There 8 ads after an act each time. Maybe the reason behind canning the show is that they have a new show or they want to re-brand. That's all good and well but it felt sad the way it happened," he proclaimed.
Isidingo is set to air it's final episode in March this year.
