Mzansi Magic Confirms The Bala Family Won’t Return for Season 3

Mzansi Magic has confirmed that The Bala Family will not return for a third season in the near future, leaving the Bala family and viewers disappointed.

The Bala family’s reality-TV journey

The reality series follows the personal and professional lives of musical siblings Zwai, Loyiso and Phelo Bala, alongside their sister Pinky, their mother Vuyiswa and members of their wider family.

Since premiering in 2023, the show has regularly appeared on social-media trending lists and built a strong audience around the family’s music, relationships and home life.

  • Zwai Bala
  • Loyiso Bala
  • Phelo Bala
  • Pinky Bala
  • Vuyiswa Bala
  • Their extended family members

Mzansi Magic explains the decision

Mzansi Magic said the decision formed part of its regular scheduling reviews and broader programming-strategy changes. The broadcaster did not provide figures about the programme’s overall audience performance.

Mbali Ntuli, the channel’s head of unscripted content for middle and mass South Africa, said commissioning choices are shaped by several considerations as the network reassesses its programming lineup.

She also expressed appreciation to the Bala family for allowing viewers into their world across the show’s two seasons, adding that Mzansi Magic remains committed to finding compelling, genuine stories from South Africa.

Zwai Bala shares the family’s disappointment

The broadcaster’s comments came after Zwai Bala posted a statement on behalf of the family across social media last Tuesday.

In the message, the singer said the family had spent nearly two years attempting to get another run of The Bala Family made. They had been willing to once again show viewers their lives, homes, relationships and music, but said a third season would not be produced soon. Zwai made clear that the choice had not come from the family and admitted they were upset by the outcome.

He stressed that the series meant far more to the family than a conventional television production. Sharing their private lives with the public had been an intimate and emotionally demanding experience, making the programme especially personal to them.

The family also apologised for the long wait, explaining that their optimism may have seemed like a promise. They said they had been prepared, believed the audience was ready too, and wanted viewers to hear the situation honestly and directly from them.

  • The family said the decision to halt plans for season three was not theirs.
  • They acknowledged viewers who had continued waiting for the show’s return.
  • They thanked audiences for supporting the family and for showing why their story mattered.
