Spank Daddy aka Nasty C is undoubtedly the most celebrated rapper in Mzanzi. At only 24 years old he has featured on billboards in New York City’s Times Square, he has made his acting debut on one of Netflix’s top series, Blood & Water and he casually and occasionally rubs shoulders with international stars.
Although the music genre amapiano is what is currently rocking the South African and International air waves, during an Instagram live, Nasty C said he would not be doing any amapiano song and would prefer that his industry peers not offer him the opportunity to do a song because he would decline the offer. No doubt that he loves the sound but he would rather stick to his lane and do what he does best which is hip hop.
Although other rappers such as Boity have hopped onto the amapiano bandwagon Nasty is not the only South African to give the genre a hard pass. Fellow rapper AKA is also not too keen on amapiano and has even questioned it’s longevity in South Africa compared to hip hop.
Spank Daddy has a long list of accolades under his belt and recently just racked up another by achieving his second BET hip-hop nomination. His first nomination way back in 2017 for best international act: Africa and this year, the nomination was for best international flow. He was nominated alongside a few big up and coming names such as Ladipoe of Nigeria, Little Simz of UK and Laylow from France.
Nasty C spent his 2020 putting in the work and it was definitely a busy year for him. Through a joint venture with Universal Music Africa, he signed an exclusive deal with the American multinational label Def Jam Recordings. He also released his 3rd studio album, Zulu Man With Some Power, which was a 20-track album which featured some big names such as R’n’B songstress Ari Lennox T.I, Lil Gotit, and Lil Keed. The work all paid off because earlier this year Spank Daddy won best hip-hop album at the South African Music Award (SAMA’s) for his 2020 Zulu Man With Some Power release.
Even with all his achievements Nasty is far from satisfied. The rapper has set his sights on conquering the world as an African rapper and he is set on doing the work needed to make his dream a reality. During his visit to Kenya, the rapper was quoted saying “"What we are doing is not going to happen overnight. We have not yet seen African Hip Hop artists blow up globally. It will take some time. We will have to do a lot of groundwork. It won't be easy because I am based in Africa. However, I am prepared though it won't be easy"
Our eyes and ears are defo peeled on Spank Daddy and we cannot wait to hear what he’s been working on because we know he never disappoints. Nasty C’s longtime girlfriend Sammie is always by his side and we love to see it. You can read more about Spank Daddy here
