Nigeria’s D’Tigers have been handed a fresh boost in their bid to reach the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, with forward Chimezie Metu named among the contenders for the First Round MVP award in the African Qualifiers.
The FIBA shortlist, published after the opening stretch of the qualifiers concluded, highlights 10 standout performers from across the continent. Metu represents Nigeria on the list alongside several notable figures, including Senegal’s Brancou Badio, Angola’s Selton Miguel, Guinea’s Shannon Evans, Egypt’s Assem Marei, and other top contributors from the early games.
Metu’s impact has been central to Nigeria’s progress so far. Over three matches, he posted averages of 12.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists, delivering the kind of all-around performances that also underlined his defensive value. That combination has kept Nigeria firmly in the hunt as the competition moves toward its next stage.
Nigeria began the qualifiers with a win over Tunisia, then followed it with a tightly contested 80-79 victory against Guinea. In that decisive game, Metu produced the key late contribution that helped swing momentum in Nigeria’s favour and secure the narrow success.
D’Tigers closed out the first round with a strong win over Rwanda, finishing the opening window with two victories from their three fixtures. The results have strengthened their qualification prospects ahead of what comes next.
The First Round MVP poll is designed to recognise the most influential performers across the African qualifiers, with supporters set to cast votes for the player they feel made the biggest difference during the first window of games.
For Nigeria, Metu’s nomination reflects the growing momentum within the national team as D’Tigers look to regain their edge in the race for a return to the World Cup. With the qualifiers set to continue later in the campaign, his leadership and steady production are likely to be crucial to how far Nigeria can go.
