Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have shifted their focus to Wednesday’s showdown with Australia, aiming to secure their opening points in the four-nation U-17 Invitational Tournament in China after suffering a 3-2 defeat to Tanzania in their opener.
The five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup winners arrived in Yinchuan with the intention of starting strongly, but they found themselves trailing during the first half. Issa Chole and Hamisi Chenga put Tanzania ahead with goals that left Nigeria chasing the game.
After the interval, Nigeria increased the tempo and showed more urgency going forward, managing to pull one goal back. However, Kassim Juma responded for Tanzania, restoring the advantage to a two-goal margin and ultimately steering the Serengeti Boys to victory.
With that result in the books, Coach Uwejamomere Eboboritse’s team now faces a crucial task as they prepare for the Australia match. A win would keep their chances alive in the competition and put them back on track early in the tournament.
Tournament set-up and purpose
The event is staged by the Ningxia Football Association in partnership with the Yinchuan Sports Bureau. Promotion is handled by the China Football Industry Development Corporation, and the tournament is designed to give participating teams a preparation platform ahead of major international competitions.
Nigeria’s wider pathway
For Nigeria, the trip also forms part of their build-up toward the WAFU B U-17 Championship in September, which acts as the qualifying pathway for next year’s U-17 Africa Cup of Nations. A strong performance against Australia would therefore provide valuable momentum heading into that bigger qualification assignment.
