Zimbabwe have encountered a major blow on the eve of the London Unity Cup, with defender Brendan Galloway ruled out of the tournament due to injury.
The veteran left-back is unlikely to return before the competition gets underway after medical evaluations, dealing a setback to Zimbabwe’s preparations for the invitational event in London.
Galloway’s withdrawal arrives just as newly appointed head coach Kaitano Tembo turns his attention to his first assignment with the national team.
Zimbabwe will begin their campaign in the opening semi-final of the Unity Cup against Nigeria at The Valley on May 26, with the victor set to progress to the final.
The tournament is viewed as a chance for Zimbabwe’s coaching staff to experiment with different player combinations and to assess both locally based talent and players plying their trade abroad ahead of upcoming international competitions.
For Nigeria, the clash also represents a key checkpoint as the Super Eagles continue their preparations under Eric Chelle.
