Relegation prompts leadership change
Two weeks before the interim committee was announced, Governor Douye Diri dissolved the board of Bayelsa United after the club were relegated at the end of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign.
The new appointments were made public by Bayelsa State’s Deputy Governor, Dr Peter Akpe, during the weekly Prosperity Walk at Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa.
Six-month mission to return to the top flight
Dr Akpe stressed that the committee’s immediate responsibility is to guide Bayelsa United back to the NPFL within the six-month period, arguing that the club cannot remain in the lower tier for an extended time.
He said the committee includes an experienced football administrator, Dr Peter Singabele; former Director of Sports, Sir Braveman Wodi; Director General of the Prosperity Cup, Mr Ono Akpe; Godson Ekarde; with Ken Ekpolaemi Odogu set to serve as secretary.
“The job is to move Bayelsa United out of relegation and back into the Premiership level, which is where the club belongs. Dr Peter Singabele, Braveman Wodi, Godson Ekarde, Ono Akpe and Ken Ekpolaemi Odogu have six months to return the team to the top division,” Dr Akpe said.
The deputy governor also urged stakeholders across the state to rally behind the interim board and provide the support needed to ensure the government-backed club achieves its goal of returning to the top flight.
