Nigeria’s electricity backbone is set to expand by an additional 220 megawatts as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) allows Mainstream Energy to begin work at the Kainji hydropower switching yard. The development comes after TCN formally granted Mainstream Energy access to switchyard unit areas designated 1G3, a step confirmed in a statement released on Sunday by TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah.
TCN said the handover of the site took place on Friday, 5 June 2026. The company noted that the physical transfer of the 2x330kV bay construction location is meant to clear the way for the project’s next phase, including civil, electrical, and mechanical activities, along with testing, commissioning, and other approved tasks required to bring the bays into service.
Upon completion, TCN added, the new 220MW bays are expected to support the evacuation of two additional turbines—IG3 and IG4—each with a generating capability of 110MW. Combined, the two units would add 220MW of capacity, which is planned to be installed at the Kainji power station.
