At least nine ships have already docked at three Lagos-area ports—Lekki, Tin-Can Island, and Apapa—while awaiting customs and other clearance steps to unload petroleum-linked cargo. The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) said the vessels are positioned to discharge products that include Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), aviation fuel, diesel, and gasoline, alongside bulk fertiliser.
Ships held for clearance across Lagos ports
The NPA said the development was outlined in its Shipping Position update, which tracks maritime activity across Nigeria’s seaports.
- Minimum of nine vessels have berthed at Lekki, Tin-Can Island, and Apapa ports in Lagos State.
- The ships are awaiting clearance before they can begin discharging their cargoes.
- Petroleum products referenced include Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), aviation fuel, diesel, and gasoline, plus bulk fertiliser.
Planned arrival window from May 15 to May 22
The authority added that the current set of docked vessels is part of a broader movement plan for incoming traffic expected at the Apapa, Lekki, and Tin-Can Island ports over the period of May 15 through May 22.
- Expected arrivals span from May 15 to May 22 at the three Lagos ports.
- In addition to the nine vessels already berthed, the NPA projected roughly 35 more ships to berth during the same review window.
Range of cargoes scheduled for the ports
Alongside fuel and fertiliser, the NPA noted that incoming ships carry a wide mix of commodities, reflecting both energy supply flows and broader import demand.
