The 2026 edition is expected to attract a strong group of Gold Label-standard elite competitors, alongside Nigeria’s top road runners. Organisers say international prize money will also be available, adding further incentive for the best from across the distance running world.
Now established as a major stop on the athletics calendar, the race was the first event in West Africa to achieve World Athletics Label recognition. It began in 2013 and has been held consistently since, with the World Athletics Label earned in 2015.
The route begins at Apana Road and finishes in Okpekpe, a hilltop community in Edo State’s Edo North Senatorial District. Competitors cover ten kilometres that mix rolling hills with tarred roads, giving the event a distinctive challenge for both men and women.
Records and broadcast team
Kenya’s Daniel Simiu Ebenyo has the men’s course record, clocking 28:28. In the women’s race, Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui—born in Kenya but competing for Kazakhstan—set the benchmark time of 32:38 at the 2023 running.
Live coverage will include commentary from an athletics journalist with experience in the sport and a background as a member of the World Athletics Media Study Group.
Dare Esan, Media and Activation Director, said the event continues to grow in stature. “Okpekpe has become a fixture on the global calendar since 2015 and continues to showcase Nigeria’s capacity to host world-class events,” he said.
Beyond the track, the race has been widely credited with supporting tourism and encouraging investment in Edo State, further strengthening its role in the region’s wider economic activity.
