Cristiano Ronaldo’s search for a first trophy with Al Nassr ended in heartbreak as the Saudi club were beaten 1-0 by Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League Two final.
Al Nassr entered as heavy favourites
Al Nassr arrived at the showpiece as overwhelming favourites after completing a flawless sequence of 10 victories from 10 matches across the competition.
Even with squad rotation prompted by domestic league commitments, they appeared well placed to turn a dominant run into a piece of silverware.
Gamba Osaka defend resolutely to upset the odds
Despite Al Nassr’s reputation coming into the match, their rhythm deserted them when it mattered most. Gamba Osaka delivered a disciplined and stubborn performance designed to limit the Saudi side’s chances.
Much of the resistance was anchored by goalkeeper Araki, whose key saves helped keep Al Nassr at bay throughout the contest.
The deciding moment and late push for a comeback
The contest swung in Gamba Osaka’s favour early in the second half when Hummet scored the goal that ultimately proved decisive.
Al Nassr pressed for a way back from that point, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Joao Felix was among the players who came close, but Gamba Osaka held firm to claim the title.
For Ronaldo, it meant the defeat also denied him the club’s first trophy in his time with Al Nassr, as Gamba Osaka lifted the AFC Champions League Two crown.
