South African singer-songwriter Simphiwe Dana has been flooding social media with love after marking her daughter Zazi’s 23rd birthday using a tribute that felt both intimate and powerful.

Taking to Instagram, the award-winning artist posted a set of photographs that trace Zazi’s path from early childhood into adulthood, offering fans a rare look at the bond she shares with her daughter.

Alongside the images, Dana turned to memory, revisiting the moment she became a mother and describing how Zazi arrived with “more than a full head of hair”—a reference to the isiXhosa term isihluthu.

She also recalled Zazi’s calm entrance into the world, explaining that her daughter seemed to settle herself quietly, as if instinctively knowing how to soothe.

“She was born at 23:43 on this day. She has been a self-soother ever since. But the things that soothe her most are other human beings,” Dana wrote.

In the caption, Dana then reflected on the timing that made the moment even more meaningful to her, noting that she became a mother at 23 in 2003—before pointing out the striking connection between their ages.

“I was 23 when I gave birth to my Zazi…, in 2003. She’s now 23. Also, I was born on the 23rd. My people who follow the stars will understand this.”

As she continued, Dana shared how Zazi has grown into a confident, independent young woman, saying her curiosity and habit of questioning everything often bring her right back to her own younger self.

“Zazi and I’s discussions are fire because she questions everything just like me. I woke up, and my little Zazi wazi is an adult whose decisions and arguments I see.”

Wrapping up the post, the proud mother offered heartfelt encouragement in isiXhosa—urging Zazi to trust God, move through life with dignity, stay aware of who she is, protect herself, and keep a grounded spirit.

Dana also made it clear just how proud she feels of the woman Zazi has become.

The emotional tribute was paired with the hashtag #23/23/23, highlighting the milestone that ties together Dana’s age when she had her daughter, Dana’s own birth date, and Zazi reaching 23 years old.
