Media personality Somizi Mhlongo has opened up about a romance that fizzled out almost as quickly as it began, revealing on Metro FM that his recent three-month fling ended abruptly after he realised he’d been dating a married man.
Speaking during his radio chat, Somizi pushed back on the idea that flirting is automatically wrong, framing it as something he sees as part of dating life. In his view, being single means he has every right to look for connection and, potentially, love.
He then took listeners behind the curtain of his life after marriage, explaining how the situation unfolded with a man he referred to affectionately as “Somgaga.” The reality, however, hit hard once he discovered the truth about the person he’d been seeing.
“Three months ago, I had a fling, because I am single, so I’ve got the right. But I didn’t know that this person had a partner and was married,” Somizi said.
Somizi described how the cold weather played a role in the first real sign of trouble. He said he eventually decided to reach out by text, only to learn that his message was picked up on by the man’s wife.
“So the partner found out through a text sent which said, ‘I am cold,’” Somizi explained.
The moment also came amid ongoing public interest in Somizi’s personal life. The latest revelation arrives after a long, complicated chapter for Mhlongo that has included intense headlines around his highly publicised divorce from Mohale Motaung, a split that featured allegations of infidelity and abuse.
Continuing the timeline, Somizi said the aftermath was immediate. He claimed his phone started ringing and buzzing, and when he didn’t respond, another message arrived from an unfamiliar number.
“I then received a text saying, ‘It’s urgent, please call back,’ and that’s when I knew that something was fishy. But he later calls me with a different number, saying, ‘Things are getting heated, she (referring to his wife) saw,’” Somizi told Metro FM listeners, recounting the sequence as he experienced it.
For him, that exchange effectively marked the start of the end of that particular “fling.”
Somizi’s comments also touch on a theme that has followed him through controversy: despite the public fallout from past relationships and legal disputes tied to their unfinished marriage, he says he still believes in love.
