Thato Mokoena Opens Up on the “Boundary” Break That Ended Her Marriage to Gash1

Celebrities

Thato Immaculate Mokoena has shared fresh details about what led to the end of her marriage with Big Brother Mzansi personality Brandon “Gash1” Mthombeni, saying the split grew out of a serious mismatch around boundaries she insisted on from the start. In a candid YouTube video posted on Sunday, 8 June 2026, she described how their relationship ultimately reached a breaking point when her husband asked her to reconsider something she never planned to compromise.

The boundary issue that tipped the marriage

In her YouTube update, Mokoena said the marriage was put under strain after Mthombeni pushed for her to shift on a point she had always treated as non-negotiable. She framed the moment as one where she refused to “negotiate” about values she considers essential.

“He literally wanted me to negotiate on something that I told him was non-negotiable, and I’m not going to do that,” she said.

How their timeline shifted, and what she says about blame

Mokoena also recalled that the relationship was relatively steady during its early stage, claiming things changed as time went on. She said the first two years of their marriage felt stable, with difficulties emerging more clearly in the third year.

She then addressed the relentless attention surrounding her private life, making it clear she doesn’t feel obligated to answer public questions about why the marriage ended. Instead, she said the person who should be responding is Mthombeni.

“I’m not the perpetrator,” she stated. “One, I’m not the perpetrator. Two, I’m telling you that I’m not going to say anything, so why are you asking me?”

  • She said she owes no one an explanation for the end of her marriage.
  • She insisted that Mthombeni should be the one answering questions.
  • She said she will not provide further comments on the matter.

Public attempts to reconcile and the relationship’s origin

Despite the tension, Mokoena acknowledged that both she and Mthombeni had invested meaningfully in the relationship. She credited him with showing up at first, but said that effort didn’t continue.

“We were two people willing to be and do, and we did, and we tried until he didn’t,” she said.

She also revealed that Mthombeni and members of his family arrived the day after she announced the divorce, saying the visit was intended to help the pair reconcile. While she recognized the gesture and described it as humble, she said she declined.

Mokoena and Mthombeni first crossed paths on 23 January 2022 when they were introduced as contestants on Big Brother Mzansi season 3. What began as a friendship inside the house later deepened into a romance that won over viewers, who rallied behind them as a couple. Fans gave them the nickname “Tash1,” combining elements of their names.

Marriage, baby, and Mokoena’s confirmation of the divorce

Mokoena and Mthombeni eventually married in 2022 and welcomed a baby boy in 2025. She later confirmed the end of their three-year marriage in an April 2026 statement shared on X (formerly Twitter).

In that statement, she wrote: “After three years of marriage, Gashwan Brandon Mthombeni and I are no longer together. Following incidents that happened in the past few days that are irreconcilable by my standards and values, I have made the decision to walk away.”

Her latest remarks come after the couple’s split became a topic of public debate, with Mokoena directly addressing the scrutiny and emphasizing that her decision was driven by standards she says can’t be adjusted.
