The Local Organising Committee for the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos has marked the 80th birthday of John Peters, one of Africa’s most respected table tennis officials, with a formal tribute recognising a lifetime of service to the sport.
Peters, a former “blue badge” umpire and a figure widely described as an “encyclopaedia of the laws of the game,” was honoured during a short but emotional ceremony at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall within Teslim Balogun Stadium on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
The decorated official has devoted more than six decades to table tennis, with experience spanning major multi-sport events and top-level competitions. His record includes officiating at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and African Games, as well as both World and African Championships, establishing him as a leading authority on the sport both inside and beyond Africa.
Speaking during the ceremony, Peters expressed his appreciation to the organisers: “I am grateful to the LOC for this celebration. I hope to continue staying close to the game I love.”
The tribute was delivered as a surprise recognition during the ongoing tournament. Competition was paused briefly so the ceremony could take place, and Peters was visibly moved by the unexpected honour.
Even in retirement from day-to-day roles, Peters remains closely connected to the table tennis world he has served since his youth. Officials say his unmatched understanding of the laws of the game continues to provide an invaluable reference point for the wider table tennis community across the continent.
