Letoya Makhene Opens Up About Regret and the Impact on Her Family

Celebrities

Letoya Makhene is getting brutally honest about the emotional ripple effects her past relationships have had on her and her children, saying she still feels genuine regret about choices she made in her personal life.

Since The Makhenes premiered on Mzansi Magic in April, audiences have kept a close eye on the actress and musician’s family story—especially the conversations online that focus on her romantic past and the way she navigates motherhood.

Why she created the series

In an interview with the channel, Makhene explained that the reality show was her own idea and that she viewed it as more than a chance to land on screen.

Speaking as a former Generations: The Legacy actress, she said the program ultimately became a platform for her to regain control of her voice after she faced what she described as a harmful public smear campaign following her widely covered divorce from Lebo Keswa.

She added that while the show also offered a financial boost and helped her rebuild after her work was disrupted by that first wave of backlash, it served a bigger purpose: correcting the story people had been told about her.

“Beyond it being a good financial opportunity and helping me get back on my feet after the first smear campaign against me shut down my work, it was also a chance to correct the narrative and allow people to decide for themselves, through my story, whether they want to love or hate me,” she said.

New scrutiny over her personal life

Makhene’s private life once again grabbed attention after reports circulated that she may be expecting another child. Around the same time, the father of the baby was briefly seen in the series’ pilot episode.

Balancing love, work, and parenting

While reflecting on her journey, she acknowledged that her romantic choices haven’t always matched the stability and harmony she has worked hard to create in other areas of her life.

Between raising children, pursuing music, handling acting responsibilities, and managing family obligations, she says she’s been forced to face difficult truths about herself and the consequences of her decisions.

“I am most disappointed in myself when it comes to my choices in partners, and I have worked too hard to establish balance. I am currently on a journey of self-discovery,” she shared.

She also admitted that some of her personal decisions have caused pain for her children—something she says continues to weigh heavily on her.

“That’s why it hurts so much knowing that some of my choices have affected them negatively,” she stated, before adding, “I’ve had to, and continue to do the work to forgive myself for where I’ve gone wrong. They are my world.”
