5 Things We Learned from VMAs

The MTV Video Music Awards Ceremony has to be one of the most popular awards ceremonies outside of traditional 'Awards Season,' in the modern era. Every year we are always left with plenty to talk about, analyse, debate, gawk at and reflect upon, and this year's ceremony is no different as it dominates international and local entertainment news. Depending on where you're getting your news from, the VMAs this year were dominated by either Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Nysnc or Bruno Mars. Instead of focussing on one show stopper, ZAlebs has decided to put together a list of lessons we learned from the MTV VMAs this year.

5. Bruno Mars is actually becoming a very entertaining performer.

Bruno Mars has always been one of the music industry's favorite musicians, with no wonder too; the boy is as talented as he is charming and good looking. However, the one skill that was missing from his repertoire when he burst onto the scene in 2010 was his ability to hold his own in a live show. His performances at Awards Ceremonies often seemed to be lacking in weight, and not a true reflection of his unquestionable talent. That is no longer the case, and Bruno proved once again why he is one of the industry's leading artists with a seductive performance of his new single, 'Gorilla.' The crowd went ape (haha) for the sexy Bruno, and we're glad to see him taking even more steps towards becoming the complete pop artist.

4. Kanye West is Pretty Boring When He's Not Doing Something Crazy

We miss the old Kanye. The 2009, "I'mma let you finish..." Kanye. The new, more normal, dad-Kanye is difficult to write about. On the night Kanye performed the popular track 'Blood on the Leaves,' From his album Yeezus. While the performance itself won't have stolen any headlines, it was a sound reminder that Kanye does exist outside of interrupting people's speeches.

3. The VMAs are not about the AWARDS anymore.

Just look at all the headlines this morning. Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, 'NSync(Pictured above; the old members joined Superstar, Justin TImberlake briefly on stage for a performance.) If you didn't watch the awards ceremony, you probably wouldn't know who won which award unless you searched for "VMA Winners" I don't know if this is particularly important, but it is very interesting that an awards ceremony has became much less about awards and more of a celebrity popularity face off. Whether or not this is a bad thing is purely dependent on the individual, though!

2. Lady Gaga's Star is slowly waning.

Lady Gaga is a show stopper. Without batting an eyelid, "Mother Monster" is well capable of delivering a humdinger of a performance that will have the media scurrying about like a troop of ants. But... we've kinda gotten used to it all, don't you think? Her performance on Sunday night was another spectacular, gimmick-filled performance, as she sang her new hit single, 'Applause' We can't help but feel that The Fame Monster was, sadly, the best it will ever get for Lady Gaga and that Born This Way, and now Artpop are looking like sad attempts to outdo the incredible album. She did so well in 2009-10 because she was fresh. Now we know what Gaga is all about, it's becoming more and more difficult to take us by surprise. Don't get us wrong, Lady Gaga is incredible. But we think she's slowly on the way down.

1. Miley Cyrus is not capable of any other dance move except...

TWERKING. Has Miley been named the unofficial ambassador for twerking?! First of all, we have nothing against Miley twerking. We also accept that twerking has become a global phenomenon. We're just curious as to why Miley has to twerk so damn much, and all the damn time! We get it Miley, you can Twerk! Her performance, which has been greeted with boundless disdain, was basically her singing, and taking the time to bend over and twerk at every possible interval. It comes across as a bit desperate; a bit attention-needy and takes away from what could have been a very exciting performance. As an aside, does Miley need some clothes? We're willing to donate.
