Britney Jean- Not amazing, but not awful

Quick facts…

Did you know Adele is such a big fan of Britney Spears, that she allegedly once cancelled her show by calling in sick just to go to a Britney concert that was on the same day? Adele is probably thrilled then that Britney is back with her 8th studio album, “Britney Jean,” which is, of course , her full name according to her birth certificate. Spears has referred to “Britney Jean” as her “most personal record yet,” but the pop superstar’s latest, produced by will.i.am, is more of an experiment than an autobiography. It’s the first album she’s released in her thirties (she is 32 now) and it’s filled with breath-catching bridges, robotized voice samples and funky beats that prove Britney’s not ready to give up her crown to any twerking Cyrusses. Especially if you consider that she has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time and that Rolling Stone recognised her instant success as one of the Top 25 Teen Idol Breakout Moments of all time. Oh, and Forbes reported that Spears was the highest paid female musician of 2012, with earnings of $58 million, having last topped the list in 2002. Slowing down? We don’t think so.

Best tracks…

Alien, Till it’s gone, Perfume, Passenger.

What others have to say…

So Britney’s back in the game, brushing all the riffraff away from her pop throne. Even though we’re in the middle of a pop-princess pileup this winter, with Miley, Katy, Gaga and more elbowing for room on the dance floor, Britney remains the queen who out-bangs, out-booms, out-bizarres them all. www.rollingstone.com

What we have to say…

Most personal album yet? Okay. Fortunately, that doesn’t mean she gets all Dr Phil or emo on us. “Britney Jean” is filled with good, catchy pop songs and reminds the world that even though Britney has had her fair bit of controversy in her life, her more mature streak (since an album or two ago) is set to continue, but not at the risk of losing the fun.

It makes us wanna…

“…watch that video of “Baby One More Time” a few more times…”

In her own words…

In an interview with The Telegraph, Britney had the following to say when she was asked why she thinks this is her most personal album yet: “There are a lot of songs about heartbreak I can relate to because of the break-up I went through this year,” she explains. “When you go through heartbreak, you just do the things that get you by. Eventually you realise it’s about making the most of life. Even on the album when it talks about having a good time with friends and family, it’s because these are the things that make you happy and get you through heartbreak.”

Score… Turn the volume up to 7.5
