We really were spoilt with some of the hottest events in Mzansi this past weekend. From the You Spectacular Awards to the Melville Music Festival, and of course, the Castle Milk Stout unplugged session, where Zalebs were at on Sunday Afternoon.
Now we must admit when we first received the invitation to attend this unplugged session we thought to ourselves “Castle Milk Stout?” that’s something our grandfather’s would drink, hence we were more eager to see how such a brand associated with old men with pot bellies would appeal to us, especially on an entertainment level. From the get go we were impressed there was definitely nothing fossil like about this Milk Stout event.
Nestled between the streets of Gwi gwi Mrwebi in Newtown. the first thing that welcomed us to the event were the urban sounds of Hip Hop music that gave off an atmosphere of someone who was about to experience the street life of a battle cipher in the streets of Brooklyn New York. Upon arrival tall dark glasses of Castle Milk Stout were served to the guests.
Playing on the decks was Hip Hop DJ Kenzhero who entertained our ear drums right into the night before soul-singer Nonku Phiri blessed the stage with her two man band. It was the subtle things that made this event a pure success (well apart from the flowing alcohol) It was definitely refreshing to see how the event planners attended to their guests, delicious food dished in white bowls was served all around making sure no one left on an empty stomach, the dessert delicacies served to us were also to die for, it’s safe to say that we were well fed right into the night.
ZAlebs managed to snatch CMS brand Manager Mbongezi to find out what really was the main aim behind this Milk Stout project and this is what we had to say:
“Castle Milk Stout is currently undergoing a face-lift where we plan on making the brand more appealing to a much younger market; we’ve been launching these Castle Milk Stout unplugged events all over South Africa to make our targeted market aware that this beverage can now not only be enjoyed by their uncles and grandfathers but also by them. Our unplugged sessions have become a great success and we plan on launching more events of such a nature” he said.
Amongst the local ZAlebrities spotted at the gig was Hip Hop veteran & producer, Ammunition who entered the event bursting with laughter with his friends, making a silent entrance just before Nonku’s performance was TV presenter, stylist, entrepreneur and “Forever Young “reality T V star Siyabonga “Scoop” Ngwekazi. Two ZAlebrities who were really enjoying themselves was socialite and former Vuzu 10 over 10 panel commentator Lerato Sengadi as well as actress Thuli Thabethe who looked incredibly sexy in her all-black outfit. The Vuzu crew was in deep as we spotted yet another “10 over 10” panel commentator Vimbai Mutinhiri who shot to fame as a housemate on Big Brother Amplified in 2011. Former music journalist, singer and SAMA nominee Kabomo also came to show support as for Nonku Phiri’s performance we only have one question to ask her: When is your album coming out lady!? The taste you gave us on stage had us begging for more.
