Controversial former Sunday Times columnist Jani Allan has revealed more detail about her claim that Oscar Pistorius took acting lessons to prepare for his murder-trial.
Jani recently posted an open letter to the murder-accused athlete on her blog, janiallan.com, in which she claims to have it from a “reliable source” that he was trained by a professional actor prior to the much-publicised murder trial, during which he has dramatically broken down in tears and vomited on numerous occasions.
A well-known journalist in South Africa during the 80s, Jani fled the country after an assassination attempt on her life when a bomb was placed outside her Sandton apartment in 1989. Her reputation had suffered irreparable damaged due to a scandal over claims she had a sexual affair with Eugene Terre’blanche, leader of far-right political movement, the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging or Afrikaner Resistance Movement, something which she has always denied.
Jani is currently working as a waitress in a small town in New Jersey.
During an interview with Fox News reporter Shepard Smith, Jani gave more information about her alleged “reliable source”.
She told Shepard: “I was told [that Oscar had acting lessons] by a very reliable source; a lawyer I have known for 15 years. The lawyer is a friend of the actor.
“However, I have to say, when I tried to take the matter further and actually name the person, steel horses came down.”
When asked to clarify what exactly she means by this, Jani said: “South Africans are very divided on this Pistorius trial and they see me as having attacked one of their untouchables, a hero I have demythologised if you like, and the hate mail I have had as a result of my open letter, which was just opinion, is quite frightening.
“I’ve had my apartment bombed and I’ve had a failed assassination attempt on my life, but nothing has compared to the hate mail from Pistorius’s camp.”
She added: “I am not in the country. I’m far away, I haven’t been in the country for many years, but I am following the trial very closely. People very close to me and to the situation believe that he’s acting. June Steenkamp, Reeva’s mother, believes he is acting. And I ask you with tears in my bloodshot eyes, what is he doing with a 19-year-old girl if he’s that desperate and decimated?”
Once again prompted by the Fox reporter to explain what she means, she said: “Well, he has a new girlfriend in the wings. Or perhaps not even in the wings. Apparently they were holidaying in Mauritius, so he can’t be THAT broken hearted.
And when quizzed about whether she wrote the open letter to Oscar just to get publicity for her upcoming memoirs, ‘Just Jani’, she said: “I certainly think it will be. I had no idea it would go so viral.
“I think it’s just, the toes of the great are very sensitive, so it has been reproduced in about half a dozen countries.”
