Exclusive: Lucas Radebe

The 32 soccer balls used in the recent Afcon tournament have been handed over by former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe to a soccer club in Umlazi, in the south of Durban.

The Adidas brand ambassador coached the children in a soccer clinic and then made the presentation to the the Umlazi Soccer Academy earlier this week.

Each ball has a stamp on it, showing which Afcon match it was used in. The club was chosen from soccer clubs across South Africa.

Adidas’ Zobuzwe Ngobese explains why the local club was selected.

“We looked at several clubs around the country. Umlazi have got a very good structure. They seem very organised [and] they have a passion for football,” he said.

“They’ve got youth teams from under 12, under 14, under 17 and open. They’ve got over 100 young footballers taking part in their activities – and we thought, you know, this is a deserving club.”
