Even though a week has passed since the SAMAs, some of us are still hung over, not because of the alcoholic intake but because of some of the fashion disasters that had us doing a double-take just to make sure our eyes were not deceiving us. Stylist, Francois Louw gives us his fashion opinion on some of the gowns and suits that were worn on the night.
Boity Thulo and Rebecca
This is one of the worst things that could ever happen on the red carpet. Ladies, word of advice, always plan ahead. Don’t buy something at the last minute because this will be the result. Pallu should have had a better hold on this, surely they know their clientele and which celebs are wearing their dresses. In terms of the actual dress, it’s a beautiful dress for the red carpet and stage.
Bonang Matheba and Danny K
This was one of the dresses that stood out and Bonang knows exactly how to wear it well. In terms of colour and design it was spot on and it translated well on screen. It complimented Queen B very well. However, an even closer inspection of the dress added a bit of dissapointment on my side, made from a material that did not do it justice. The material reminded me of paper Mache and cheapened the look.
As for Danny K, I liked the colour of the jacket but many of my Facebook comments mentioned the length of it. The reason it looks wrong is because it’s a double breasted jacket which should have been slightly longer. If he wanted that length he should have gone for a single –buttoned jacket. It would have made it look great. Overall it’s a good look for Mr Good Look, Danny K.
Phuti Khomo and Mbali Mlotshwa
I love Phuti and I love that we hardly see her around. However, when she does she makes an impression and the SAMAs were no different. I absolutely loved the detail on the corset. I don’t really like the head peace but she manged to pull it off.
Onto Mbali, well – my girl Enhle did trend on Twitter with this look. We chose to do the built in padding around her hip area to give it a very Avant Garde feel. This trend is something happening internationally and I think Enhle rocked it from head to toe. Her Swarovski jewellery sparkled on the red carpet and complimented the colour of the dress wonderfully. This look makes me teary.
Naima Kay and Gail Mabalane
I was honoured to dress the new artist of the moment. Dressing Naima was a bit challenging, she is known for her afro – chic look so we created an African couture dress to compliment her style. This dress was there to make a statement in African print and red tulle. The corset extenuated her femininity and gave her a mature award winning look.
Gail’s dress was very interesting, because she took the ember look to another level it usually goes from the bottom to the top. The colour cascaded elegantly from the middle to the bottom.
Donald and Zonke
I love Donald's jackets, whoever made this one needs to contact me! Everything about this look was great and on trend. The black satin shirt is formal and very well fitted. The jackets patterns compliments any man’s body and in this case it highlighted his arms and chest. His pants are right-on-trendy and they compliment his shoes very nicely. I’m floored by Donald and will definitely buy his album just because.
Zonke, on the other hand, really disappointed me with this look. Ladies, if you're going to take upon an androgynous look to an event, you must always know that accessories are key! Where are the earrings and stilettos Zonke? Some jewellery would have finished off the look. Don't get me wrong Zonke is always stunning, but this Tom Ford look didn't do it for me.
