Khaya Mthethwa Gets What He Wants!

How did you find out that you’d be the opening act for Miguel?

The whole Miguel thing… To be honest, I kinda took the bull by the horns. I was rehearsing with my choir (for Clash of the Choirs SA), while keeping an eye on the happenings on Twitter when I came across the competition that T-Bo Touch was running. He had asked his listeners to vote for who they’d like to be the opening act for Miguel’s shows. I saw that I was in the top four and so, on my drive back from Soweto I just decided to drive past the Metro FM studios in Auckland Park and let him know that whether he continued or not with his PR genius of a contest, I, Khaya Mthethwa, was going to be on that stage!

Will this be your first time opening for an international act?

What escapes a lot of people is that before the Idols fame, I was already performing with Joyous Celebration. I’ve had the amazing opportunity to open for the likes of Kirk Franklin and Isreal Houghton. This past December I was honoured to be invited to perform in an international gospel festival in Nigeria.

Apart from your single Move, what other songs will you perform at the Miguel concerts?

As you know my debut album, For You was released in late November 2012. On it are 12 tracks – plus a lot of my unreleased material. So I’ll be performing tracks from there.

You’re also a choir master on the Mzansi Magic reality show, Clash of the Choirs. Are you enjoying it so far?

It’s been an amazing exprience learning not to rely on just myself to deliver a killer performance – but to shape 20 choir members to sing with one voice.

Khaya Mthethwa will open for international artist Miguel at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg on March 1 and 2 and at the Grand West Casino and Entertainment World in Cape Town on March 3 .
