In a country where the concepts of democracy and freedom of expression are emphasized and encouraged, it's no surprise that Of Good Report is making headlines after being banned from the country's media outlets.
Of course, the fact that it's banned now means that everybody wants to get their hands on it and see what the fuss is all about. Well, it's largely because of a sex scene involving a 16 year old character and her teacher. It's worth noting that although she appears as a 16 year old in the film, the character is played by 23 year old Actress! Those who are passionate about film and expression have jumped to Of Good Report’s defense claiming that the scene is included in the film to enhance the story line; that is what film and acting are all about, right? Portraying different characters and scenarios in order to tell a story?
The director of the film, Jahmil XT Qubeka, was quoted as saying, “"The child porn thing smacks of the greatest ignorance, incompetence and downright stupidity,"
Spokesperson for the Film and Publication board, Prince Mlimandlela Ndamase explains that ‘Of Good Report was banned because it carries “An Illegal Act in it”
Now, I’m in NO WAY condoning Child pornography, underage sex, or statutory rape. But I don’t buy the excuse that a film should be banned because it portrays “An Illegal Act in It” as opposed to actually committing said illegal act on film.
Also, if we’re to abide by those standards; then shouldn’t Tsotsi have been banned? I’m not saying one crime is worse than another, but theft, attempted murder and kidnapping are all illegal acts too. Likewise, although it’s not a locally produced film, everybody was quick to praise our darling Charlize Theron for her spectacular performance in the American film Monster in 2004. That film contained very vivid scenes of rape and domestic violence; both illegal acts in this country.
Both of the above mentioned films were popular hits in South Africa, because they neither condoned nor solicited illegal activities: they told REAL stories that take place in South Africa (Or in Monster’s case, around the world.) Why is Of Good Report any different? The producer of the film, Michael Auret has appealed against the ruling of the FPB. I can't say for certain whether or not it will be a succesful appeal, but one would hope it is.
Hopefully this doesn’t spark a wide campaign of film censorship, as this would do nothing but damage the quality of SA’s film industry.
What do you think, should Of Good Report Be banned?
